چکیده
Microalgae have been used during the past four decades in the Bio-industries for the production of high added value products and development of useful approaches with environmental applications. The fast growing rate, simple growth requirements and using sunlight as the major source of energy are the key factors for usage of algae. In the past 15 years, a considerable progress has been made regarding the use of microalgae for production of proteins, nutraceuticals, food supplements, molecular tags for diagnostics and fixation of greenhouse gases. Nevertheless, genetic manipulation of microalgae still remains a fairly un-explored area which could boost the production of bioproducts. It is anticipated that in the near future use of microalgae will revolutionize its applications in diverse industries. The aim of this work is to present a critical review on potential of microalgae for the production of high-added value molecules, their practical applications, and the role of genetic engineering in its utilization as a unique niche in industry. In addition, current challenges within synthetic biology approaches are discussed.

Genome and methylome of the oleaginous diatom Cyclotella cryptica reveal genetic flexibility toward a high lipid phenotype
BACKGROUND Improvement in the performance of eukaryotic microalgae for biofuel and bioproduct production is largely dependent on characterization of metabolic mechanisms within the cell. The marine diatom Cyclotella cryptica, which was originally identified in the Aquatic Species Program, is a promising strain of microalgae for large-scale production of biofuel and bioproducts, such as omega-3 ...
متن کاملEnhancement of Shikalkin Production in Arnebia euchroma Callus by a Fungal Elicitor, Rhizoctonia solani
Background: There is a growing demand for mass production of shikalkin (a natural pigment consisted of shikonin and alkannin) due to its increasing applications in cosmetics, pharmaceutical and nutrition industries. The root of Iranian Arnebia euchroma produces shikalkin. The promising capability of this plant for shikalkin production has already been demonstrated in cell culture studies. Obje...
متن کاملGenetic engineering of the Calvin cycle toward enhanced photosynthetic CO2 fixation in microalgae
BACKGROUND Photosynthetic microalgae are emerging as potential biomass feedstock for sustainable production of biofuels and value-added bioproducts. CO2 biomitigation through these organisms is considered as an eco-friendly and promising alternative to the existing carbon sequestration methods. Nonetheless, the inherent relatively low photosynthetic capacity of microalgae has hampered the pract...
متن کاملUse of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae in the treatment of dairy wastewater
Background and Objective: Nutrient-rich effluents (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) may lead to algae blooms and many harmful effects in aquatic environments. Micro-algae have been more effective among the various methods used for the removing of nutrients from wastewater. Microalgae Chlorella vulgaris has specific characteristics such as rapid growth, resistant to systems manipulation, simple a...
